The conference is over - see for the latest news and awarded young scientists
Conference mission and a brief summary of the eventThe aim of the meeting was to address different aspects of ecotoxicology, ranging from molecular to ecosystem level. The leading theme of the conference was "Ecotoxicology in the real world", and thus presentations addressing problems broader than standard ecotoxicological tests were particularly welcome. In the call for abstracts we encouraged interested ecotoxicologists to address problems arising from interactions between chemicals and suboptimal (stressing) natural environmental factors. Combined stressors effects discussed during the meeting included also interactions among chemicals themselves. Some presentations stressed also another side of the problem: "the real world in ecotoxicology" - e.g., problems of cost-benefit balance in ecological risk assessment. Soil reclamation, wastewater treatment, problems arising from pollution with pharmaceuticals and disposed army weapons as well as novel methods in environmental chemistry were also presented. Altogether, we had a diverse and really interesting meeting. Last but not least, we had three excellent keynote talks, leading us from subcellular and cellular biomarkers (Paweł Migula) through populations (Richard Sibly) to ecosystem effects (Michiel Rutgers). The important aim of the conference was to facilitate cooperation between ecotoxicologists from all over Europe with special emphasis on Central and Eastern Europe. We had a pleasure to host scientists from as many as 16 countries, and thus we may say that from the point of view of "internationalization", the aim of the meeting has been fulfilled. Unfortunately, the Central and Eastern Europe countries were represented definitely inadequately - and that was certainly our failure. We hope, however, that with the help of those who participated in the event, the news will spread and we will be much more successful next time. We would like to thank everybody who
participated in the meeting for being with us, for interesting presentations and
discussions. Special thanks are due to our keynote speakers for their splendid
talks, and to the members of the Scientific Committee for their help in
organizing the meeting. Our sponsors are acknowledged for their financial
contribution, which made it possible to keep the conference fee at the
reasonable level to grant special discounts to a number of young scientists.
