Research interest

  • Studies on the influence of abiotic factors (physical, chemical, hydrological, geomorphological) on the functioning and structure of macrobenthic assemblages.
  • Research on the trace metal bioaccumulation by macrobenthic invertebrates and employment of selected freshwater (Gammarus fossarum, Baetis rhodani i B. vernus) and marine (Talitrus saltator, Mytilus trossulus, Balanus improvisus) species in biomonitoring of metal pollution.
  • Studying the applicability of selected biological methods for the assessment of the environmental status of running waters both natural and to different degree changed by human activities. Testing the possibilities of adapting the River Habitat Survey method to use in upland watercourses of southern Poland.
  • Studies on the faunistics of stoneflies (Plecoptera), as well as on the taxonomy and zoogeography of mayflies (Ephemeroptera) inhabiting running waters. Describing new species, taxonomical revision and re-descriptions. Research on the chorion structure of mayfly eggs, and on fossil mayflies found in Baltic amber (Eocene).
  • Investigation of biology and ecology of protozoa, cyanobacteria and filamentous bacteria, especially: biodiversity, predator-inducible defense mechanisms, trophic interaction.
  • Among interests of research group there are important practical aspects of environmental protection. In cooperation with wastewater treatment plant operators (Czechowice, Pszczyna, Kraków-Płaszów) the following researches are conducted:
  1. effect of certain group of microorganisms on structure and function of activated sludge biocenosis
  2. biological control of activated sludge bulking by grazers of filamentous bacteria
